I receive many questions about my hair – who’s my stylist (see this GMG Now interview with him!), do I take hair supplements, what hair tools do I use, and how do I keep my hair healthy and shiny. While I haven’t added anything to my diet specifically for my hair, I do eat a (mostly) plant-based diet, though I semi-recently began adding fish back into my diet as well. I focus on trying to eat as many vitamin rich foods as I can. I believe that how you look and feel is a reflection of what you put in your body. We eat to nourish ourselves, so if we’re eating poorly, we will see the reflections of that in our skin, hair, nails, etc. I don’t eat perfectly clean, I am human and I love having pizza or ice cream once in a while, but everything in moderation. I do love sugar and eat sweets daily, but in small amounts of dark chocolate or fruit.
A few simple things I’ve done over the years to improve the health of my hair included, getting frequent trims, which helps prevent breakage, switching to a wide tooth comb (one of the best decisions I made years ago), cutting-back on blow drying (when possible) to let my hair air dry more, keeping a more natural shade, meaning less color appointments, and adding oils like Josie Maran’s Argan oil to my hair after every other wash. When I want to create “perfectly imperfect” waves and curls, my favorite styling tool is my GHD curve soft curling wand in a 1 1/4 inch barrel. But before I share tips on how I use it, I have to say (even though I know we all already know this) that every person’s hair is different and may react/perform differently. One person may have curly hair that’s full of volume, another may have stick straight hair that won’t curl, one may have thin hair that’s flat but curls well, etc. My hair falls under the category of super thick and straight, soft texture but holds a curl really well. So, with that being said, I curl my hair with my GHD wand using the clip (not twisting it around). I divide my hair into small sections to curl and start at the top and work my way down. I hold my hair a lot longer on the barrel than most people, because again, my hair is really thick and it may take a few more seconds than most to get it hot enough to curl. You can watch this Beach Waves tutorial video I did on Youtube to see more of the techniques I use. I’m going to try and post more beauty videos on Snapchat, so stay tuned!
