My first introduction to smocking and smocked details was in a traditional strapless crop top (also known as a tube top) when I was a teenager. The stretchy, embroidered fit was super popular because it allowed the barely-there top to stay up on it’s own – a cool alternative to throw on over a swimsuit in warm weather. Simple smocked pieces have come a long way since then, with added flutter sleeves, ruffles, and flounced hems in everything from dresses to tops, blouses, skirts, swimsuits, rompers, and more. Playing-off on bohemian or classic styles, smocked details offer a natural, feminine, flattering and supportive fit. This easy to wear, often pull-on style is a perfect choice as a cover-up or to take rolled-up with you in a carryon or beach bag this summer.
