We’ve been known to binge watch shows from time to time. Normally, our binging takes place with shows like The Bachelorette where it’s more background entertainment while we work at night. But sometimes there are shows so good that you eliminate all distractions, setting aside computers and phones, to dedicate your full attention to them. There’s been such awesome television shows released lately that we decided to put together a list of 5 of our favorites you may not have discovered yet, ripe for binge watching. The list has little in common other than the fact they are all T.V. shows, they are all great, they are relatively new, and they come from 1 of 2 networks (3 Netflix, 2 HBO).
The Night Of (HBO)- No big stars, no glitz and glamour. This 8 episode mini-series about a Muslim-American that’s accused of brutally killing a troubled, pretty rich girl in NYC is one of the best crime related shows we’ve ever seen. It reminded us a bit of True Detective (Season 1, of course). The identity of the killer is unknown, even to Naz, the accused suspect who passed out the night of, only to discover the dead body in the morning. Like any great mystery, each episode leaves you guessing as new clues are discovered. A bit brutal at times, this show is not for the faint of heart.
Stranger Things (Netflix) – A pack of nerdy, science, Dungeons and Dragons-loving kids from a small town in 1983 get mixed up in a heap of trouble when government experiments go bad, spilling over into the local community. We normally stay away from Sci-Fi shows but after receiving constant recommendations, we gave it a shot. We were immediately hooked, and like most people, we finished binge watching it in a matter of days. The kids are amazing actors and actresses and you quickly get lost in the show, rooting them along as they take on the bad guys.
Chef’s Table (Netflix)- A Netflix staple that’s now into it’s 3rd season where the focus is only on French chefs. We recommend this series to anyone that eats food, which means everyone. By far one of the most beautifully filmed shows you’ll ever see, it focuses on the restaurants and stories behind the world’s best chefs. If you are new to the series, start with the Francis Mallmann episode, which is the most beautiful of all the episodes. Another favorite is Mexico City chef named Enrique Olvera. WARNING: Don’t watch this show on an empty stomach.
Narcos (Netflix)- This story is based on the life of Pablo Escobar, who, in case you’ve been living under a rock, was probably the biggest drug lord of all time. It follows Pablo as he rises to power in Colombia, and highlights the American DEA agents that are trying to take him down. It’s a fascinating story and amazing that any one person could have such a huge impact on millions of lives in Colombia, as well as around the world through the drug trade.
Ballers (HBO) – We both loved Entourage and Ballers has the same look and feel, probably thanks in part to having the same excellent team of producers. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays a former NFL star that lost all of his savings on some bad business deals and now acts as a financial advisor to current players. The story follows him and his mix of close friends, made up of other NFL players that he represents. Based in Miami, it has similar partying scenes to Entourage, and plenty of cameos from professional football players. While it’s probably not going to win any awards, it’s certainly a fun and entertaining show to watch.
