A Week On Nantucket, Part 2

The second half of our week on Nantucket begins with the Fourth of July. In the last post we left off on a wonderful beach day, which felt a little bit more like an actual Fourth of July since the fireworks happened that night. We ended up staying at home grilling and hanging out playing games late into the night. On the morning of the Fourth, we all got dressed in our most patriotic attire and headed out to brunch at Island Kitchen, fueling up for a fun day of sailing ahead.

After brunch, we still had a few hours to kill so we decided to fit in a little shopping. Visiting the Peter Beaton Hat Studio had been at the top of my list when planning out what we wanted to do while on Nantucket. This is the ultimate sun hat destination. With straw hats in all shapes and sizes, we tried on all of the different prospects until we found our suitors. Once you have the hat selected, you then get to pick your ribbon. With a rainbow table of selections, it’s hard to narrow it down. I ended up going with two hats- one with a blush ribbon and one with a light blue gingham ribbon.

A few weeks prior to our trip, Carly had suggested that we go sailing. Of course, we were all in! She had used Endeavor Sailing before, raving about her experience, so she booked us to head out at 2pm. The last time we went sailing was in SF, and Seattle before that, so we were excited to get to experience Nantucket from the water. I love getting to see the places we visit from a different perspective, plus, it’s just a really good time! The wind wasn’t very strong on this day, so we weren’t really getting the full sailing experience, but it ended up being just what we wanted. The sun was warm and we brought cans of rosé with us- a winning combination.

After our sailing trip we headed to Juice Bar for ice cream (which is as good as everyone said it was going to be!) and headed back home to shower and rest for dinner later that evening.

Our dinner at Galley Beach was one of my favorite meals of the trip, but mostly because of the ambiance. We arrived just as the sun was setting over the water. The whole restaurant was lit up with candles and twinkle lights, with a beautiful bar out back on the beach. It’s really a lovely dining experience and all of our food was delicious.

The following morning, we sadly had to take Chassity and Gray to the airport. Carly initially had a trip back, too, but I convinced her to stay an extra day with us. It didn’t take much convincing though! We headed back downtown and rented bikes at Cooks Cycle Shop to ride around for the afternoon. It’s my favorite way to explore! Although it meant that every five minutes we were pulling over to take a picture because everything is just so picturesque and beautiful.

For lunch, we headed out to Madaket to have lunch at Millie’s. This place was amazing. The fish tacos were delicious, as were the chips and guac, salads and everything else we ordered. We left full and happy!

The following day, Carly left and Thomas and I decided to hang out at the house and relax for the morning and afternoon. I don’t think we left the house until 3pm, which was when we decided to head downtown to get Nantucket sweatshirts (at 3 Girls & A Dog) and see what else we had missed. The day was overcast and cooler, which felt really nice, and with no particular plans in action, we enjoyed just lazily roaming around, popping into shops here and there.

That evening, Thomas and I bundled up in sweaters and jeans and headed to The Wauwinet for a romantic dinner. Another wonderful spot, this was definitely on the fancier side. We would have loved to explore the grounds more, but by the time we arrived it was already dark. Next time!

The next day was our last full day on the island, and when we woke up, it was cloudy and rainy outside. This was also when I started to get the terrible flu I had for two weeks. We decided to stay in our pjs, light the fire and cuddle up on the couch watching movies. This is exactly why I love rainy days! I love the moodiness a rainy day brings, too. I can still remember the feeling of sipping our coffees in the living room, listening to the rain softly hit the roof and thinking “I love it here!”.

The day before, when we were still feeling ambitious, we had made lunch reservations at The Chanticleer. We were about to skip them, but at the last minute, threw on some clothes and headed out in the rain. The courtyard to the restaurant is this amazing garden with climbing roses everywhere. We would have loved to dine outside, but the weather had other plans for us. Instead, we sat by the window inside and watched the rain trickle down while we ate our delicious lunch. Afterwards, we headed to the market to pick up ingredients to make soup for dinner back at the house later that evening. And you can be sure we slipped right back into our pajamas the minute we stepped back home.

On our last morning, we packed up our suitcases and prepped for our trip back home. On our way to the airport, we made one last stop at Petticoat Row Bakery for coffee and muffins before saying goodbye to the island. It was definitely a memorable first time and one that had us really excited to come back and see more.

So my question is, for all of you who have been to and spent time on Nantucket, what did we miss? And what would you suggest for us to do on our next trip back? I’d love to know!
