Continuing on from Monday, today’s post is filled with all of the beautiful English countryside villages we visited while in the Cotswolds.  There are so many to choose from, it’s hard to narrow them down. And even when we did, there were ones that popped up along our drive that we just couldn’t pass up. On our initial list were Nauton, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Blockley.

After arriving to our hotel in Barnsley, we freshened up and ordered ourselves an afternoon tea to eat while we discussed the rest of the day’s plans. Should we stay in because of the rain? Or head out and explore and see what we find? Of course we went with the later, as we usually do. When in Rome! So we quickly changed into some warmer clothes, grabbed our trench coats and rain boots and were out the door.

Our plan was to go into Nauton, only a 15 minute rainy drive from where we were staying. Along the way, we could see the village out in the distance, looking like a scene from a painting. We pulled over and hiked down to a spot where we were greeted by some of the cutest sheep that were grazing lazily on the grass. We didn’t want to interrupt their dinner, but they had the best view, so we invited ourselves over anyways. We never actually made it into the town because we kept pulling over for the handful of rainbows we saw and small streets that looked too intriguing to pass by. We ended up finding some of the most beautiful backroads and country houses and finished it off with a pink sunset sky looking over a field of sheep.

The following day we had a slight setback with a flat tire, but luckily were able to put on the spare until we could get it fixed that evening. Thankfully you can’t really drive fast on the old country roads! We had three villages on our list to visit on this day and we were still able to get to them all even after a late start to the morning. We started the day at Bourton-on-the-Water which we heard so many wonderful things about. We were not disappointed. Picture an idyllic village of light stoned buildings with a quiet river running through it.

Along the river sits a few dozen restaurants and shops to explore. We stopped into Bakery on the Water for a late lunch and loved the back patio lined with tulips overlooking the river. It was a nice little spot to relax and take in the charm all around us.

Next we drove over to Stow-on-the-Wold followed by Blockely, both adorable villages that are worth stopping by. I absolutely loved just wandering through the towns (which doesn’t take long btw, they’re pretty small) and stopping into antique shops and bakeries to see what goodies might have been in store for us. It was hard not to get sucked into almost every one, I didn’t want to pass up a hidden treasure. We ended up finishing off the day with a glass of beer and wine at The Porch House, apparently it’s the oldest Inn in Britain dating back to 947AD!
